On September 30th we organize our 2nd Edition of ‘Design for persuasion’, while the first one was an introduction, this one will go more into the practice or best practices, case based with results, on the usage of Design of Persuasion.
This year we will also organize a workshop on the 29th September in the afternoon, from 14.00 – 17.00.

It is all about digital influence, and changing behaviors, based on DR. BJ Fogg studies on behavior change through technology.

The conference is again co-oragnized by Dr. BJ Fogg Persuasive tehcnology lab at Stanford University, and Christel De Maeyer – Howest, The Studios – plugMedia.

The principal of social selling

The sales process changed in many ways today. The customer is in control, and the old selling tricks, from cold calling, mailings and so forth don’t really work anymore.

Selling is about listening to your customers, read markets (what do people need) and listen to influencers. All this information you can gather trough social networks and social media spaces.  A new way of CRM is on the horizon, and Axel Shultze together with Andy Rudin wrote a white paper on this new way of social selling.

Last week on the design for conversion conference, we had a whole debate on conversion to mobile devices in specific. But then also other things came across like the whole social networking and media. Finished with the lazy times where you just hang out in your couch in the evening watching the tube.

This conference has a specific concept, it is a mix of speakers and creative labs, which focus on new applications on mobile in this edition.

The speakers I really liked were Jerome Nadel and Eric Siegel.

Jerome giving an overview how social media and networking goes into the mainstream, and Eric about predictive analysis.

People are thinking with reason and emotion, but most of the time we react on impulse and therefor emotion. If we succeed to trigger the emotion effect, we are likely gone persuade the audience to let them things do, that they would not do before. This was also the topic on our conference ‘Design for persuasion’.

We are talking about the broccoli and donut effect.

In order to persuade a specific audience, you have to figure out who you want to persuade, as all people are unique and belonging to a digital tribe.

2 billion people are online and 2/3 is on mobile. A complete society change is going on, and there is a first generation that is experiencing the social aspect of the digital age. Clearly in a year or 5 things might be different, people will behave differently, as it is always is a cycle we go trough when new things pop up. Think about the usage of the first mobile phones in the 90’s. Predictions in the 70’s, there is no reason for individuals to have a computer in their home (Ken Olson 1977)

Since we can keep track of all the profiles online (details are up in the cloud), we can also start to predict a certain behavior. And there the predictive analysis comes in. If you are going to the same site over and over again (e.g. immoweb), it is very likely that you are interested in houses for rent or to buy. We can filter the profiles (collaborative filtering) and do focused marketing efforts.

One can start worrying about our privacy, the term big brother is now getting very real, as we are being tracked everywhere. On the streets, shopping malls, internet (and here we participate in sharing a lot of private information), mobile (gps) in the cars. I’m wondering how we will look at this in like 10 years from now.

Highlights and announced speakers:

Persuasive technology is broadly defined as technology that is designed to change attitudes or behaviors of the users through persuasion and social influence, but not through coercion (Fogg 2002). Such technologies are regularly used in sales, diplomacy, politics, religion, military training, public health, and management, and may potentially be used in any area of human-human or human-computer interaction. Most self-identified persuasive technology research focuses on interactive, computational technologies, including desktop computers, Internet services, video games, and mobile devices (Oinas-Kukkonen et al. 2008), but this incorporates and builds on the results and methods of experimental psychology, rhetoric (Bogost 2007), human-computer interaction, and design with intent.

The mobile phone will soon become the most powerful channel for persuasion, more influential than TV, radio, print, or the Internet.

A visit at Marc Canter

Today I brought a visit to Marc Canter, we talked about his idea on the Open Mesh. Marc also has a product Broadband Mechanics PeopleAggregator platform is available as a SaaS turn-key hosted solution or available in source code form. We taped a little video, to explain his structure of the Open Mesh framework. This is also published in book form, which gets updated all the time.

Marc Canter has 25 years of experience in the multimedia and Ict sector, living in Walnut Creek, California. More on our talk later!

The video is 30 minutes presentation from Marc Canter on the open mesh, his view and vision. Marc Canter is one of my favorite visionairies, we’ve met in the early days of Macromind during the first macromind conference at the holiday inn in Chinatown San Francisco. it was clear that we were then on the horizon of some new and exciting times.
